Omar al-Bashir: was re-elected as the President of Sudan with 94.55 percent of the votes polled. The election was boycotted by major opposition parties. He has been in power since 1989. Bashir is presently facing genocide charges at the International Criminal Court.

Whitley Awards: have been instituted by Whitley Fund for Nature, United Kingdom. The awards, also called 'Green Oscars' seek to recognise contributions to conservations made from outside the developed world. Dr Ananda Kumar was awarded the prize, for an elephant warning system that has saved human lives and reduced damage to property in the Valparai area. Dr. Pramod Patil has been awarded for his work to protect the great Indian bustard in the Thar Desert.

Akash: is India's first indigenously designed, developed and produced air defence surface-to-air missile system. The maximum range of this missile is 25 kilomteres. It can neutralise targets at a maximum altitude of 20 kilomteres. The missile has been developed as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme initiated in 1984. An Air Force variant of Akash has already been inducted.
