• Indian Constitution had originally eight schedule

Part E: Provisions as to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

• Second Schedule covers Articles 59 (3), 65 (3), 75 (6), 97, 125, 148 (3), 158 (3), 164 (5), 186 and 221.

• Third Schedule deals with forms of Oaths and Affirmations (Articles 75 (4), 99, 124(6), 148(2), 164(3), 188 and 219)

• Fourth schedule [Articles 4(1) and 80(2)]: Allocation of seats in the Council of States for each State and Union Territory.

• Fifth Schedule provides for the administration and control of Scheduled. Areas under Article 244(1))

• Sixth Schedule provides for the administration of Tribal Areas in Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram

• Seventh Schedule (Article 246) contains the Union list, State list and the concurrent list.

• Union List contains 97 subjects

• The State List contains 66 subjects

Concurrent List contains 47 subjects

• In case of concurrent list the Union and States have concurrent powers

• Defence of India, Naval, Military and Air forces, Atomic Energy and Mineral Resources, Foreign Affairs, War and Peace, Citizenship. Pilgrimages to places outside India. Railways. Post Office Savings Rank. Ranking. Census. Insurance etc. come under Union List.

• Public Health and Sanitation, Intoxicating eating Liquors. Agriculture. Fisheries etc. are included in State List.

• Forests, Economic and Social Planning, Trade unions, Industrial and labour disputes, Charities and Charitable Institutions, Charitable and Religious endowments and Religious institutions, Price control, Electricity etc. are included in Concurrent List

• Eighth Schedule contains the languages recognized by the constitution.

• At present 22 languages are there. They are Assamese. Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada,Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu & Urdu.

• 14 languages were initially included in the Constitution.

• Through the 21st amendment Sindhi was added in 1967.

• Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were added in 1992 by the 71st amendment.

• In 2003 Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santali were added to the schedule by 92nd amendment

• Ninth Schedule that covers Article 31B includes Acts and Orders relating to land tenures, land tax, railways, industries, etc., passed by the State Governments, and Union Government.

• Ninth Schedule was added by the first amendment of the constitution in 1951

• Tenth Schedule contains the Anti-defection Act [Articles 102(2) and 191(2)]

• Tenth Schedule was inserted through the 52nd constitutional amendment in 1985

Eleventh Schedule deals with the provisions of powers of panchayaths

• Eleventh Schedule was added by the 73rd constitutional amendment in 1992.

• Twelfth Schedule mentions about the provision regarding powers and responsibilities of municipalities.

• It was inserted to the constitution by the 74th amendment of 1992.
