Important Sections of IT Act 2000

F IT Act is an act to provide legal recognition for transactions carried out by means of electronic data interchange and other modes of electronic communication. It is based on the United Nations model law on Electronic Commerce, 1997.


F IT Act 2000 was notified on October 17, 2000

F It is the primary law in the country dealing with Cyber crime and Electronic commerce.

F IT Act 2000 was signed by the former President of India R.K. Narayanan

F IT Act 2000 originally contains 94 sections, 19 chapters and 4 schedules

F The Act provides legal framework for a governance by giving recognition to electronic records and digital signature

F IT Act defines Cyber crimes and prescribed penalties

F It directs the formation of Controller of certifying authorities to regulate the issuance of Digital signature

F Information Technology Act established Cyber appellate tribunal to resolve disputes

F It amended various sections of Indian Penal code 1860, Indian evidence Act 1872, Bankers book evidence Act 1891 and Reserve Bank of India Act 1934

F Major amendments to IT Act 2000 was introduced in the form of IT (amendment) Act 2008, which came in to effect on October 27, 2009
